At Home Outdoor Fall Family Photos in Montgomery County, PA

Two women are sitting on the grass with four young children around them, capturing the essence of fall family photos in Montgomery County. The group enjoys a beautiful day outdoors in a serene park setting.

There are some families that have truly become to feel like old friends of mine, and the Schmidt Family is certainly one of them! I have been photographing their family for years, and being able to regularly update their family’s growth and milestones has definitely been a privilege of mine. I’ve photographed Barb and Eric’s engagement, wedding, and their family session at an apple orchard. As well as Margaret and Scott’s New York City engagement and Penn Museum wedding. So I was absolutely thrilled when they asked me to document both of their families together, as well as their other sister, and their parents for an extended fall family session. The girl’s parents took advantage of the fact that all three of their daughters were in their hometown and collectively, the family decided to grab some family photos while everyone was together.

The Schmidt family opted to do their outdoor fall family session in the backyard of their family home in Montgomery County. Doing family photos at home is always a great and fun idea, especially when there are multiple little ones eager to run around. There were four kids under the age of 5 this session, so at home was definitely the best bet to let them run around and feel comfortable in their own environment. Especially if your child has never done a photo session previously, they sometimes feel a bit uncomfortable and shy in a public setting – whereas somewhere familiar, like their grandparents home in Montgomery County, is a place they feel like they can be their true self and let their personality shine.

For this fall family session, I thought the best approach would be to let the kids just run around and play with their loved ones. Forcing young kids to stand in one spot and pose for an hour is just not entirely realistic, and to be blunt – it’s not fun for the kids! I want them to have a good time during their family photos, and to not dread it when it comes time to update their photos again. (And if we can avoid any meltdowns over posing and photos, then it’s fun and relaxing for the parents too!) Of course, I did pose the family for some photos, but letting them play and show off their personalities and bonds with one another gets you the most “real” family photos you could ever think of!
