It seems like not too long ago, I photographed Alexis and Dave’s wedding at Congress Hall in Cape May, New Jersey. So of course, it made sense to update their family photos this summer, back at the Cape May shore point. This beautiful session on the beach was not only a family session, including their daughter, but also a mixture of a maternity session as Alexis and Dave have a baby on the way! We got lucky with having the most beautiful summer day in Cape May for their session, with a relaxing blue sky that perfectly complimented the family’s pastel attire.
Family photo sessions on the beach can definitely become a bit tricky. There are so many factors that go into planning a photoshoot on the beach, such as keeping everyone comfortable and in good spirits, finding the right time of day between avoiding the crowds while getting the perfect lighting, and making sure the weather is just right.
Thankfully, over the years I’ve kind of perfected all of these aspects and have been able to have so many successful and fun family photo sessions on the beach. The best time for beach photo sessions is usually JUST before sunset. There are a few reasons as to how I’ve concluded that is the best time for photos. For one, the beach is a little bit more open and there is definitely less of a crowd on the shoreline, in comparison to earlier in the day. During this time is when most people are walking through the town, heading out for dinner or simply just decompressing from their time spent on the beach – but for us, it’s just the start of our time together. Some other reasons include the lighting and the sunset itself. That hour before sunset is truly our peak in terms of lighting, it’s not too harsh and it allows for a more softer, romantic feel to your photos. Starting before sunset also obviously allows us to capture the beautiful, mesmerizing colors of the iconic New Jersey shore sunsets.
In addition to working around the shore’s physical barriers and potential difficulties, we’ve also learned to work around your kids schedules to ensure the best experience for your family photo session. There is definitely a balance between finding the best lighting as well as taking into consideration the kids’ naps and feeding schedules. No matter what their schedule is, don’t worry – we are experts at finding the perfect time to start your family session on the beach and getting you the photos you’ve dreamed of.
