We’ve had the pleasure of photographing and documenting Molly and her family a couple of times over the past few years. Molly first reached out to us when she was pregnant with her youngest, and her eldest was only about two years old. We then got together for the first time to photograph her maternity and family photo session in Society Hill. Now that both of the little ones are here and a little bit older, it was time to update their family photos, which is what led to Molly and her husband scheduling their summer family photo session in the heart of Philadelphia, at Washington Square.
Outdoor, open locations, like Washington Square, allow- the kids more room to run and play around, which always results in some great natural, candid photos. These natural looking photos are the ones that always look like the kids are enjoying themselves, rather than like they’re being forced to sit still and smile for the camera. Not only can this lend itself to more authentic-looking family photos, but it also gives the kids something to do and look forward to while we are doing those few posed family photos of everyone sitting together and smiling at the camera. We always make sure to get a great combination of all the possible photo opportunities, so while I do focus on photographing your family authentically, we will get those handful of nicely posed family photos, and different pairings (mom with the kids, dad with the kids, etc.) as well. And we, of course, will sometimes bribe the kids with a lollipop or two to get them excited about the posed photos!
During this summer family session, we let the oldest sibling SAFELY play alongside the notable fountain at Washington Square. He loved putting his hand in the water and just getting to sit along the edge of the fountain. I always want to make the kids’ opinions feel valued during a photo session, so if they want to just take their solo photos by the fountain, then that’s what we’re doing! Some of my personal favorite photos from this family session are the ones of Molly and the kids just sitting together by the edge of the fountain, watching the water fall. Simple and unplanned, but just a truly natural moment between a loving mother and her boys on a summer day in Philadelphia.
We wrapped up the summer family session in such a sweet moment of the two boys sitting together. The eldest brother was reading some books to his baby brother while they sat on the grass in the park, as their proud parents watched on together after a successful and stress-free summer family photo session!
