Spring and fall seem to be deemed the “best seasons” for family sessions, but winter does not have to be the dead time for family photos! There’s something special about at-home winter family photo sessions. Choosing to do your family’s photo session during the winter, while embracing the cozy feeling of not only the season, but your home as well, is a nice variation from the traditional fall or beach sessions that many families opt for. While I’m not saying sessions against an array of colorful leaves or the sandy shore aren’t great, but choosing to stay at home is a great way to show off your day-to-day life in the most comforting of environments.
The Bidic Family contacted me in January to capture their family before their eldest daughter departed for her upcoming semester abroad in Italy. This was the last time the entire family would be in one place for the next several months, and really, how could I say no to that?!
We stayed almost entirely inside for their photos, due to how extremely cold it was this particular day, but that doesn’t make it a bad thing. This family wanted simple documentation of their time spent together, and that is just what we did! We embraced the real emotions of the day, and there were many laughs shared by the whole family. It’s important that we spend a good amount of time getting to know the members of the family and finding their comfort levels. We, of course, want everyone to feel comfortable enough to show their goofy sides and be vulnerable enough to show their love for one another. That is one of the things I pride myself on when it comes to photographing different families, getting the families to show their vulnerable side. We’re quick to disarm everyone’s guards….even teenagers, believe it or not! Once your family’s shield is down, it allows for more natural and authentic-looking photos, as opposed to the awkward photos of everyone sitting on the couch looking directly into the camera.
I love this session, and particularly the photos of all the kids together, hugging and laughing with one another. With teenagers, it’s sometimes a rare sight. It was the last week they’d all see each other until the end of Spring, and you could feel their love and appreciation for one another in the air. We also got some photos of Mom and Dad snuggling, kissing each other, too, which I always love to capture. Sometimes parents fall into the background of family sessions since the focus is usually on the kids, but I like to focus on every member of the family.
