Society Hill Family & Maternity Photos | A Walk Through Historic Philadelphia

One of the things I love most about family sessions is when the location actually means something to the family. For this maternity session, that’s exactly what we did.

This family lives in Society Hill, and instead of heading to one of the more common photo locations around Philadelphia, they wanted their session to happen right in the neighborhood where they’re building their life together. I always think that makes the photos a little more meaningful.

We met up on one of the quiet little streets in Society Hill and spent the next hour and a half or so just walking around. We really only covered a few blocks, but in a neighborhood like this, you don’t have to go very far. Everywhere you turn there’s another brick wall, another cobblestone street, another little alleyway that just feels like classic Philadelphia.

It was also such a fun stage of life for them. They were expecting their second baby, so we made sure to capture plenty of maternity photos of mom, but we also wanted the session to feel like it was about the whole family getting ready for this next chapter together.

Their son was right around two years old, which usually means one thing…he had much more important things to do than look at my camera.

There was plenty to explore, lots of running around, and more than a few snack breaks. Honestly, that’s pretty normal, and I never mind it. I actually expect it. Kids that age are curious, and I’d much rather let them be themselves than try to force smiles that don’t feel real. Eventually he settled in, his personality came out, and those are usually my favorite moments anyway.

That’s one of the reasons I enjoy photographing families with young kids so much. Every session is a little unpredictable, but that’s part of what makes them fun. Some of my favorite images come from the moments in between—the laughs after a snack break, a kid wanting to hold mom’s hand for a minute, or everyone simply walking together instead of looking at the camera.

Society Hill ended up being the perfect backdrop for all of it. The historic homes, brick sidewalks, and quiet streets have so much character that they never need much dressing up. It’s one of those Philadelphia neighborhoods that photographs beautifully without trying too hard.

Thanks again to this family for asking me to document such an exciting time in their lives. Sessions like these are always a reminder that family photos don’t have to happen in a big park or at sunset in a field. Sometimes the best location is simply the place that already feels like home.
