Rittenhouse Square is one of our favorite spots for family photos in Philadelphia, especially on warm summer evenings when the light filters softly through the trees and the park feels alive with neighborhood energy. This sweet session was less about posing and more about simply spending time together — strolling the paths, exploring with their little one, and letting the moments unfold naturally. Sessions like this are perfect for young families because there’s room to move, play, snack breaks if needed, and no pressure to perform for the camera. The result is a collection of images that feels relaxed, genuine, and true to this stage of life — the kind of photos that capture not just how your family looks, but what being together actually feels like in this season.
Living in the city of Philadelphia definitely gives you a lot of perks when it comes to selecting a perfect location to host your family photos; Center City basically allows the world to be your oyster! Tani and Tom conveniently live only a few blocks away from Philadelphia’s most iconic and noteworthy park, Rittenhouse Square, so it only made sense to meet there to photograph their summer family photos! The summer evening in Philadelphia was warm and felt perfect for the scene. Everyone in the family was relaxed, easy-going, and up for anything to make the perfect photo.
Tani, Tom, and their little boy were all really great in front of the camera, and didn’t need too much directing or posing, which made for great, naturally-posed and candid family photos. This is honestly the best way to approach a family photo session. Too much posing can go south rather quickly when trying to direct a toddler-led family session. Toddlers are notorious for just wanting to explore the park and, of course, get the luxury treatment of getting hand-fed their snacks (which, let’s be honest, who can blame them?). Once a toddler has their mind made up, it’s pretty difficult to persuade them, and so, we work around them! We just let everyone in the family interact with one another, which is honestly the approach I prefer when photographing families. All of our favorite photos of our own kids have always been of them just being their true, authentic, and chaotic selves while having fun with each other. Snacks in hand, dirt on the knees, hair a mess… but all real moments that reflect your everyday life. The posed, staring at the camera, and smiling photos are always nice to have, but they rarely have specific memories attached to them. And really, that’s what it’s all about! These are the moments you remember and want to hold on to for years to come. We always want to help the families we photograph feel relaxed and natural in front of the camera, which often times that means letting the kids play within the environment and essentially leading the session.
In Tani and Tom’s case, they spend so much time as a family within Rittenhouse Park, and so it made it extra special to capture them in their true day-to-day life. We love to capture the beauty of your everyday life with a toddler. Yes, it can feel messy and chaotic, but it’s also wonderful and fleeting. You can trust us to photograph your family as it really is, in all of its beauty, in every stage of life.
