Over the summer, Maura and Bob reached out to plan a maternity photo session before the arrival of their baby boy, but they had a familial twist they wanted to add in! In addition to the typical maternity photos, Maura and Bob also wanted to do an extended family session to celebrate such an exciting time in their lives. Maura’s brother and his family live in China, but just so happened to be in Philadelphia visiting during the summer, around the time Maura was due! It was truly the perfect time to document the family, including the grandparents, which is what led us to Gwynedd Preserve in Montgomery County to capture this cherished mini-family reunion.
I suggested Gwynedd Preserve to Maura and her family, as it has a variety of areas for us to utilize, creating the best backdrops that give the summer family some diversity. Gwynedd Preserve is also just an especially beautiful and well-maintained area within Montgomery County, and it wasn’t too far from the family’s home.
We started off this summer photo session photographing Maura and Bob’s maternity photos, and we, of course, made sure to include their fur-baby within the session. Maura inquired with me at the perfect time, as the peak time for maternity sessions is so unique and short-lived. You want to make sure your session takes place about a month or so before your due date, so we can really capture your round maternity belly. But we also want to make sure we’re not too close to your due date, in case the little one arrives a bit early! For a lot of people, maternity sessions are such an important time to document this relatively short and unique stage of their lives. If you think about it, it’s the first photo documentation of your little one’s life. Once we finished Maura’s maternity photos, we then shifted into focusing on the extended-family portion of the session. We photographed a good combination of the full family all together, as well as Maura with her parents, the grandparents with the baby, and Maura’s brother with his partner and daughter.
I really love photographing family sessions, such as Maura’s, on location because it truly allows us to do a mix of family formals and more relaxed and candid photos as well. And during the summer, we just let the family enjoy the weather and the afternoon together, especially when it’s so rare for the full family to be together since Maura’s brother lives in China! I’m so honored that Maura reached out to me and asked me to photograph this beautiful summer maternity and extended family photo session in Montgomery County!
