Perfect Spring Day Family Photos at Longwood Gardens filled with Beautiful Blooms

A family poses together outdoors in a garden with large, neatly trimmed hedges, capturing the essence of perfect spring family photos.

Being asked to photograph old friends is always one of the best parts of what I do. My family has personally known the Gatto family for YEARS. Our lives first became connected when my wife, Dawn, not only was the girls teacher, but their field hockey coach years ago. So I was absolutely thrilled when they reached back out to me to update their family photos! One of the girls Dawn coached, Salina, was visiting back home in Pennsylvania, with her husband and baby, from where she currently lives in Great Britain – and the family decided now was the perfect time for a spring filled family session. They really wanted to capture a full family portrait, including everyone’s spouses, babies, and of course, the roots of the family tree, the grandparents. Family photo sessions always make the best gifts for grandparents. Photo sessions are not usually something the grandparents schedule themselves, but I promise the lasting memories are something they will cherish forever. Plus, there’s never not a good time to get the whole family together, especially when there are new additions to the family, and to update your family photos!

For their family photo session, we were greeted with the perfect spring day in April, and what better place to soak up all the spring blooms than the iconic Longwood Gardens?! Longwood Gardens is always an amazing location to do photo sessions because it’s home to countless, beautiful flowers and unique backgrounds. I have been photographing at this location for as long as I can remember, and never once have I seen the same exact place twice. Longwood is known for consistently updating their grounds and rotating all of their wondrous floral displays, according to the time of year it is. So at all times of the year, it’s filled with breathtaking displays perfect for photo backdrops (and plus, it’s also just a great place for the kids to explore in between photoshoot breaks!)

My experience photographing at Longwood Gardens countless times has proven to be beneficial over the years. My exposure to the venue and its grounds has not only allowed me to discover all of the best photo backdrops, but also the best TIMES for your family session. Longwood is no secret to the public, and it can get very crowded very quickly, especially on beautiful spring days like we had with the Gatto Family. However, I’ve been able to find the sweet spot when it comes to avoiding the crowds at Longwood and it’s allowed my family sessions to function calmly and at their own pace. Not every family is the same, some dynamics may require a bit more patience and breaks in between, especially when there are little ones involved. I make sure to prioritize each family’s specific needs during the session, and I always make sure to work at the pace that works best for you.
